Lee Daniels’ Empire Draws Big Ratings In First Episode

According to Variety, Lee Daniels‘ TV series,‘Empire,’ which premiered on January 7, 2015 on Fox TV drew huge numbers in the ratings. The site reports that “Following its lead-in ‘American Idol,’ and so far the preliminary Nielsen estimates that “Empire” averaged a 3.7 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 9.8 million viewers overall from 9 to 10 p.m., besting the strong bow of the net’s “Gotham” in September (3.1/9 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall). “Empire” is just a tick below the demo score of ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” (3.8), which went on to remain hot for the Alphabet.  The big “Empire” premiere means that three of the top four launches of the season in adults 18-49 — “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Empire” and “Black-ish” — are shows fronted by African-Americans. In Wednesday’s rare head-to-head showdown of two broadcast series about black families, “Empire” easily beat “Black-ish” (3.7 to 2.1 in 18-49 and 9.7 million to 6.3 million in total viewers).”
