According to Billboard, D'Angelo will grace the Saturday Night Live stage, for his first television performance in years. D'Angelo has been confirmed as SNL's musical guest on the upcoming Jan. 31 episode. J.K. Simmons, currently nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Whiplash, will serve as the episode's host. The reclusive R&B star returned in December with Black Messiah, his first album in 14 years and one of the most acclaimed releases of 2014.Black Messiahdebuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart last month, and the follow-up to 2000's Voodoo has sold 176,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen Music. Last week, D'Angelo and his backing band the Vanguard booked its first U.S. headlining show since the new album's release, at New York's Apollo Theater for Feb. 7. Four days later, the singer will kick off a European tour in Zurich, Switzerland.
