Bill Cosby Will Not Comment on Sexual Assault Allegations, Says Lawyer
According to Variety, in the wake of the revival of sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby, his attorney has addressed the controversy with a statement, saying the star will not comment on what he calls “decade-old, discredited allegations.”Cosby’s attorney, John P. Schmitt, posted the statement on Cosby’sofficial websiteon Sunday.
“Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced,” the statement reads. “The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work,” the message goes on. “There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives.”
The statement comes a day after it was revealed that Cosby was canceling an appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” that was originally scheduled for Wednesday. Also on Saturday, the 77-year-old appeared on NPR, and reacted with silence when asked about the allegations, of which he has never been criminally charged.
Cosby is also in the early stages of developing a new comedy series with NBC and Sony Pictures TV. There has been no change in the status of the project, NBC and Sony confirmed Saturday. A source familiar with the situation also confirmed with Varietyon Sunday that Cosby’s stand-up special, “Bill Cosby 77,” is still set to hit Netflix on Thanksgiving.
The allegations resurfaced in October, when comedian Hannibal Buress brought them up during a stand-up bit and called Cosby a rapist on stage. Arizona woman Barbara Bowman also revived allegations that he drugged and raped her in the mid-1980s. Cosby and his reps have denied such allegations from Bowman and other women. On Thursday, Bowman penned anop-edin the Washington Post detailing her struggle to get the public to believe her story of sexual assault while Cosby was the star andproducerof “The Cosby Show,” and pointed out that it took Buress bringing up the issue to put it into the spotlight. In 2006, Cosby settled a civil suit with another woman who accused him of sexual assault, according to the Associated Press. She claimed in her filing that 13 more victims were ready to come forward, one of which was Bowman.
