Danielle Spencer of 'What's Happening' Reveals Battle with Breast Cancer
According to BET Centric, Danielle Spencer, best known for her role as Dee from "What's Happening!!," revealed in an interview with Black America Web a recent diagnosis of breast cancer. The former child star says she was given the news a month ago and will be heading to the hospital this week to explore her treatment options. "Surgery is definitely one of the options. I'm trying to get as many options as possible but it does look that that is what I'm going to do," Spencer explained, adding that her family has a history with breast cancer. "Hopefully after that there won't be any chemotherapy or radiation."
"With everything that I've been through with the spinal cord injury, I know God is not going to give me another affliction. So I was completely shocked when doctors told me" (Spencer was involved in a car accident in 1977 and symptoms of her spinal cord injury showed up 26 years later, which left her nearly paralyzed). Still, Spencer, who is currently a successful veterinarian, is remaining hopeful. She says she has plenty of support from the loved ones in her life.
Spencer recently launched an Indiegogo campaign for her reality series "All Grown Up!" which features herself and former child stars, James Bond IIIandRodney Allen Rippy. She's looking to explore their desire to transition back into acting and make other career moves.
She'll also be featured in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture when the permanent exhibition opens in 2015.
"I still can't believe it," she said. "That's something people can look at for years to come, long after I'm gone."
