According to USA Today, No Good Deed performed one monumental task this weekend, injecting new adrenaline into the box office as it took the top spot. The thriller starring
Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson pushed ahead of the summer's reigning box-office champion Guardians of the Galaxy with $24.5 million in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates from box-office firm Rentrak.
"No Good Deed represented brand-new entertainment with the perfect release date, two big stars and a great social-media marketing campaign," said Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak senior box office analyst. "It came on strong Friday and never let up."
The story about a charming stranger (Elba) terrorizing a housewife (Henson) was traumatic for critics, scoring a paltry 12% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. But audiences responded more favorably, with 71% giving it a thumbs-up.
Screen Gems film, made for an estimated $13 million, has already made its mark. "Screen Gems has made a science of modestly budgeted films that are grabbing audiences and they make a killing," says Dergarabedian.
Sidebar: I was happy to go out and support this film yesterday. I wouldn't give it rave reviews but just to get to see Taraji and Idris lead a #1 film is amazing. So happy for them!
