BET Awards Draw 7.9 Million Viewers

According to Deadline, it looks like taking over downtown LA for the weekend has paid of for BET. The BET Awards drew 7.9 million total viewers last night, dwarfing this year’s cable-aired awards shows like the MTV Music Awards (those drew 3.2 million viewers April 13) and heating up social media with 11 million tweets about the event. The viewership number is up from the 7.8 million who tuned in last year, when Samuel L Jackson hosted. Chris Rock hosted this year and was spot on (why isn’t he on TV more?). The weekend’s BET Experience at L.A. Live drew 112,488 attendees for film screenings, 106 & Park live tapings, interviews and concerts featuring the likes of Outkast, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Mary J. Blige, Future, The Roots and Trey Songz.

Zendaya Drops Out Of Aaliyah Movie Role

According to Vibe, this might be the briefest casting in Hollywood history. Two weeks after it was announced that singer Zendaya Coleman would portray the late Aaliyah in a Lifetime biopic, she has pulled out of the project.
Her rep tells E! Online the “Replay” singer is “no longer involved” in the film (slated for a fall release) due to "production issues" in getting the rights to Aaliyah's music. The film was said to depict her life, including her relationship with mentor R. Kelly, up until her untimely death at age 22 in a plane crash on August 25, 2001.
"Aaliyah has always been an inspiration to Zendaya," the source said. "She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her. If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right."

The movie has come with its own controversy. Recently, Aaliyah's cousin Jomo Hankerson told V-103 Ryan Cameron’s show that he feels the biopic would be better suited for a theatre release and that actress Zoe Saldana should take the lead.
"I just think this needs theaters. This needs to be a major movie film. I would love to get Zoe Saldana [to play Aaliyah]," he said. "I think she can pull off the acting part of it and she’s obviously gorgeous and beautiful."
Despite the backlash, Zendaya has remained positive.

Chris Rock's Opening Monologue at BET Awards [VIDEO]

Chris Rock gave a great opening monologue for the 2014 BET Awards held live at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on Sunday (June 29) in Los Angeles. No celebrity was safe from his jokes.  Rock  went in on Solange Knowles, Jay Z, Oprah Winfrey, and of course Donald Sterling. Everyone in the audience seemed to love Chris Rock.  I was really surprised at how much he had me laughing.

“An 83-year-old white man doesn’t like black people. Is that news? Come on!”Chris said about the former Los Angeles Clippers owner. “A black man couldn’t look him in the eye until he was 45. The first black man he ever met, he got for Christmas.” Check out his entire monologue below.

Nia Long with her Family at The Spurs Champion Series Game

According to BCK, Nia Long loves spending time with her kids. The actress recently shared pictures of her and little Kez at the basketball game. The mother and son had excellent seats that allowed them to see all the pressure that the San Antonio ‘Spurs’ put on the Miami ‘Heat’ in this year’s championship series. “Game face,” tweeted Long.
Ime Udoka, Kez’s father, certainly had his game face on as he and Head Coach Gregg Popovich steered the ‘Spurs’ to victory. San Antonio made a clean sweep during this year’s championship series by winning four out of the five games played. Ime guided his team from the sidelines, and showed much exuberance when they won on the final game day. “Got that GOLD baby,” tweeted Nia who watched the game from the stands and was every bit excited to see her Ime successful.
Long is all about success and helping her two kids find the path that is most fulfilling. “My mantra is, ‘You created this, you can handle it,’” says the star. “I think that if you’re committed to being a great mother, single or not, you’re going to enjoy every moment you have with your children.”

Rick Ross Arrested in North Carolina

According to TMZ, Rick Ross was arrested in North Carolina Friday night all because cops say he blew a court date stemming from a weed arrest in town last year. Ross was taken into custody by the Greensboro Police Department late Friday night right after his performance at SuperJam 2014 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Officials say there had been a warrant out for Ross because he never showed up to court to deal with a marijuana arrest in Greensboro back in 2013 so, when he came back to N.C., cops pounced. Ross was cooperative with police -- and has since been released from custody after posting bail.

Eddie Murphy Headed To Detroit To Film 'Beverly Hills Cop 4'

According to Centric, Eddie Murphy is headed to Detroit.  One of Hollywood’s biggest names will be seen around Motor City as he films the fourth installment of the 1984 classic Beverly Hills Cop. The Michigan Film Office announced on Thursday that the movie would be shot in metro Detroit and nearby locales.
Murphy’s role as Alex Foley, a brash Detroit cop who takes his skills to Beverly Hills, catapulted his career to superstardom in the mid-80s. Directed by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), the new storyline abrupts Foley from his lavish Beverly Hills life sending him back to Detroit. He’ll encounter harsh realities and old foes in “one of America’s most tenacious cities,” says the Michigan Film Office statement.
Detroit Free Press reports that the new film has been approved for $13.5 million in Michigan film incentives based on $56.5 million in anticipated spending in the state. This is good revenue news for Detroit considering its bankruptcy, which recently led to the announcement that the city would begin cutting off 150,000 of its residents' water.
The project is also projected to hire roughly 352 Michigan workers, or a full-time equivalent of 318 jobs.
Beverly Hills Cop was a blockbuster hit when it debuted in 1984. It went on to create two sequels in 1987 and 1994. The franchise has grossed approximately $735 million worldwide.
Per DFP, Detroit’s former police commander and city council president, Gil Hill, appeared in all three films as Foley’s police inspector boss. The film’s return to the Motor City makes it the second largest project in the spotlight of MI film incentives only following Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  The film is slated for a March 2016 release.

Singer, Bobby Womack, Dies At The Age Of 70

According to TMZ, Veteran soul singer Bobby Womack died Friday.

Womack's sister says he passed away in his sleep. She says they don't know the cause of death.
Bobby struggled with multiple health problems throughout his life including: diabetes, pneumonia, colon cancer and the early signs of Alzheimer's.

Considered as one of the great soul singers, who, in a professional career that lasted nearly six decades, worked closely with leading musicians ranging from Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett and Sly Stone to Damon Albarn and Gorillaz.
Yet for many years, he was better known as a songwriter and session musician. The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, George Benson and Chaka Khan were among the many who recorded his songs and his funky guitar flourishes can be heard on records by Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin. But he will be primarily remembered for his voice, a rugged and emotive baritone holler that came straight from the gospel church.
His No. 1 R&B entries were “Woman’s Gotta Have It” (1972) and “Lookin’ for a Love” (1974), a remake of a number he recorded with his family act the Valentinos for Sam Cooke’s SAR label.

He recorded some lesser R&B chart singles for New Orleans’ Minit Records before signing in 1971 with United Artists Records, where he found his greatest commercial success. His hits for the company – which combined his trademark grit with a softer, acoustic-based sound – included “That’s the Way I Feel About Cha’” ((No. 2, 1971), “Harry Hippie” (No. 8, 1972), “Nobody Wants You When You’re Down and Out” (No. 2, 1973), “You’re Welcome, Stop on By” (No. 5, 1974), “Check It Out” (No. 6, 1975) and “Daylight” (No. 5, 1976). He also crafted some outstanding albums for the company, including “Communication” (1971) and “Understanding” (1972).

Womack segued to Beverly Glen Records in the late ’70s; there he recorded the mellow, widely praised album “The Poet” (No. 29 in 1981) and its 1984 successor “The Poet II” (No. 60).

He wrestled with a serious cocaine addiction that scuttled his career in the ’80s. He recorded sporadically thereafter, and published an outrageous autobiography, “I’m a Midnight Mover,” in 2006. His later life was marred by tragedy, including the murder of one of his brothers, the death of two sons, and the jailing of a third.  Womack also notched a top 20 hit with “Across 110th Street,” the title number from the 1973 crime thriller starring Anthony Quinn and Yaphet Kotto; Quentin Tarantino appropriated the song for use under the opening credits of his 1997 pic “Jackie Brown,” and it was also employed in the 2007 Denzel Washington film “American Gangster.”

In 2009, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Why Keshia Chante Turned Down Aaliyah Role

According to Rolling Out,  “106 & Park” co-host Keshia Chanté, was originally tapped to play her dream role of Aaliyah. Recently she revealed why she decided to turn down the opportunity of a lifetime.
In the absence of the Haughton family involvement with the made-for-TV flick, Chanté declares that she just didn’t feel comfortable moving forward. She also sends her support to Coleman via her Instagram on Tuesday.
Now regarding the Aaliyah film, I just want to say Thank You all for the outpouring of love & support. You guys went so hard!! It’s really touching to know that you root for me! Words can’t even express. But this particular project just wasn’t for me. After learning more about the situation & how the Haughton family truly felt, I just didn’t feel like it was right. But at the end of the day, this is just one, of what will be many movies on Babygirl’s life. So maybe one day, if it’s the right circumstance, timing & I get the blessing, I’ll choose to be a part of something. Until then, keep #Aaliyah’s legacy alive & positive! And support my girl Zendaya who is just living out her dreams & working hard to do so! xo KC
Lifetime TV continues to move forward with Disney star Zendaya Coleman as their Aaliyah and she recently visited the set of BET’s “106 & Park,” where the 17-year-old announced that she was filling in for Chanté. And while it may have looked a bit awkward, the two claim there is nothing but love between them.

‘Middle Of Nowhere’s Emayatzy Corinealdi To Join Don Cheadle’s Jazz Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’

According to Deadline, Don Cheadle‘s Miles Davis biopic is moving along with Emayatzy Corinealdi. The Middle of Nowhere star is in negotiations for the female lead in Miles Ahead following Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana‘s exit due to a scheduling conflict. She’ll play Davis’ wife Frances Taylor opposite Cheadle as the iconic jazzman and Ewan McGregor as Dave Brill, with Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Stuhlbarg also in talks to join the cast. The script, by Steve Baigelman and Cheadle, tracks a few dangerous days in Davis’ life as he emerged from a silent period to conspire with a Rolling Stone writer to steal back his music. Earlier this month Cheadle turned to crowdfunder Indiegogo to raise $325K to fund the indie production. It has reached nearly half of its goal with a little more than two weeks left to go.
Corinealdi broke out at Sundance 2012 after director Ava DuVernay cast her as a woman coming to terms with her husband’s eight-year prison sentence inMiddle Of Nowhere. That drama earned acclaim and nabbed DuVernay Sundance’s top directing honors. DuVernay is now directing her high-profile follow-up, the MLK pic Selma, with Middle Of Nowhere‘s David Oyelowo starring as the civil rights leader.  Corinealdi’s Middle of Nowhere performance earned her a Spirit Award and Image Award nominations as well as the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performance. She subsequently landed a role in Lionsgate drama Addicted and appears in Amazon’s upcoming Marc Forster-directed pilot Hand Of God. Corinealdi is currently shooting Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation opposite Logan Marshall-Green and Tammy Blanchard.

'American Idol' keeps Seacrest and judges

According to CNN, "American Idol" Season 14 will look a lot like last season -- at least in terms of the judges and the host.  Fox has announced that the entire Season 13 crew will return. That means host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. will all be back witnessing some of the best, and worst, of America's singers.  "I am thrilled our consummate host, Mr. Ryan Seacrest, is returning for Season 14, together with Jennifer, Harry and Keith," "Idol" creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said. "Their interaction, warmth and experience made them an absolute joy to watch. I can't wait to see their evolution together continue next season."  The reality singing competition has had some upheaval at the judges table over the past few years as it's struggled with faltering ratings and the lack of any competitors who have reached the heights in the music industry of former winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.  Lopez initially joined the show in Season 10, but left following Season 11. Season 12 was rife with rumors of a feud between then judges MariahCarey and Nicki Minaj. Urban joined the show that season, replacing rocker Steven Tyler.  Ryan Seacrest is the only member that has been with "Idol" since it premiered in 2002.

Trophies went to Telemundo's "Un Nuevo Dia" as best morning program, to CNNE's "Clix" as best entertainment show and to Rodner Figueroa of Univision's "El Gordo y la Flaca" as best daytime talent in Spanish.  CBS, which received eight creative arts Daytime Emmys for technical achievements at a ceremony last week, emerged as the network leader with a total of 14 awards after Sunday's ceremony.  PBS received a combined 13 awards, with six for HUB Network; five for TOLN.com; four for ABC and three for NBC.

The ceremony, which aired on the cable news channel HLN last year and in 2012 after losing its longtime home on the broadcast networks, this year settled for streaming the proceedings online. The change in fortune reflects the dwindling daytime audience and programming shifts.
Kathy Griffin hosted Sunday's ceremony, with Billy Bush and Mario Lopez among the presenters.
