The Arsenio Hall Show’ Cancelled After One Season

According to Deadline, CBS Television Distribution has made a decision not to proceed with a second season of the syndicated Arsenio Hall Show, despite renewing the show for Season 2 in February after securing a two-year deal with the Tribune stations pre-launch. After a stellar launch (1.9 in households, 1.0 in adults 18-49), The Arsenio Hall Show quickly faded in the ratings and never bounced back, despite a boost from a highly-rated Prince episode in March and appearances by Leno and Eddie Murphy. CBSTD tried righting the ship with an executive producer change in October when Eric Pankowski replaced Neal Kendall at the helm. In the end, nothing helped. The Arsenio Hall Show, which has wrapped production, has recently averaged a paltry 0.7 rating in households and a 0.3 in 18-49 and has been plagued by a slew of station downgrades. “While there are many loyal fans of the show, the series did not grow its audience enough to continue,” a CBSTD spokesperson said. “Arsenio is a tremendous talent and we’d like to thank him for all the hard work and energy he put into the show. We’d also like to thank Tribune and all our station group partners for their support of the show.”  This marked the comeback for Hall, who had one of the most successful late-night syndication stints with his previous show, which launched in 1989. “When I started this adventure with CTD and Tribune, we all knew it would be a challenge – I’m gratified for the year we’ve had and proud of the show we created. I’d like to thank everyone on my staff for rallying around me and striving to make the best show possible every night.”
Sidebar: I'm sad for Arsenio.  Every night, you could tell he really loved being back on TV. Check out our interview with Owen Smith, one of the writers for The Arsenio Hall Show below.

R.I.P. Dr. Maya Angelou

Poet and essayist Dr. Maya Angelou died Wednesday at the age of 86, according to reports in her hometown of Winston-Salem.  Her son, Guy Johnson, a poet and novelist, is her only immediate survivor.

Angelou was best known for the first of her six memoirs, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970). She described being raped at 7 and becoming an unwed mother at 17.  In addition to her books, she was an actress, director, playwright, composer, singer and dancer.  She even once worked as a madam in a brothel and as the first female and first black street car conductor in San Francisco.

Angelou spent her early years studying dance and drama in San Francisco but dropped out at age 14, instead becoming the city's first African-American female cable car conductor.  Angelou later returned to high school to finish her diploma and gave birth a few weeks after graduation. While the 17-year-old single mother waited tables to support her son, she acquired a passion for music and dance, and toured Europe in the mid-1950s in the opera production "Porgy and Bess." In 1957, she recorded her first album, "Calypso Lady."

In 1958, Angelou become a part of the Harlem Writers Guild in New York and also played a queen in "The Blacks," an off-Broadway production by French dramatist Jean Genet.  Affectionately referred to as Dr. Angelou, the professor never went to college. But, she was awarded more than 30 honorary degrees and taught American studies for years at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.

Angelou was born April 4, 1928, in St. Louis.  She grew up between St. Louis and the then-racially segregated town of Stamps, Arkansas.  The famous poet got into writing after a childhood tragedy that stunned her into silence for years. When she was 7, her mother's boyfriend raped her. He was later beaten to death by a mob after she testified against him.  "My 7-and-a-half-year-old logic deduced that my voice had killed him, so I stopped speaking for almost six years," she said.

From the silence, a louder voice was born.

In 1954, she toured the world in the cast of Porgy and Bess. In 1960, she and comedian Godfrey Cambridge produced and starred in Cabaret Freedom, a benefit performance for Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She later served as its Northern coordinator.

From 1963 to 1966, she taught music and dance at the University of Ghana. In 1977, she was nominated for an Emmy for her role in Roots, the TV miniseries.  She also wrote nine children's books, 13 collections of poetry, four collections of essays, adapted I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings for CBS in 1979, narrated the 1996 video, Elmo Saves Christmas, and complied a cookbook in 2004, Hallelujah! The Welcome Table.  Angelou spoke at least six languages and worked at one time as a newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana.

She dedicated her 1993 essay collection, Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now, to Oprah Winfrey, who hosted grand birthday parties for Angelou.  Winfrey, who called Dr. Angelou her mentor, referred to her as "sister friend."  In 1997, Oprah's Book Club chose Angelou's The Heart of a Woman, the fourth of her memoirs.  In A Song Flung Up to Heaven, she circled back to the events that led her to begin her first book and dealt with the assassinations of Malcolm X in 1965 and King in 1968.

As professor, singer and dancer, Angelou's work spans several professions.  She wrote and delivered a poem at President Clinton's 1993 inaugural.  Her recording of that poem, On the Pulse of Morning, won a Grammy.  In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded her with the Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor.

"I want to write so well that a person is 30 or 40 pages in a book of mine ... before she realizes she's reading," Angelou said.

Rest Peacefully Dr. Angelou - Thank you for all of your contributions to the world.

"And I understand it."  "Everybody's after money, the estate, the lawyers. It's about money," Jones said. "It's not my business anymore."  Jones also spoke about working on bestselling album "Thriller" with Jackson, and how he took the lead on the project."What am I gonna learn from Michael? I don't wanna be singing and dancing," Jones said. "I didn't ask him about anything. We told him what songs he was gonna sing. A producer has to do that."

‘Frozen’ Reaches $1.219 Bil to Become Fifth-Highest Grossing Film Globally

According to Variety, Disney’s “Frozen,” surpassed the studio’s “Iron Man 3″ this weekend to become the fifth-highest grossing film of all time, with $1.219 billion worldwide.  Boosted by its $400 million-plus Stateside cume, added to a nearly unheard of $194 million cume in Japan, “Frozen” now stands as the second-highest grossing release for Disney, behind Marvel’s “The Avengers,” which is the No. 3 all-time top grosser, with $1.5 billion globally. “Iron Man 3″ made $1.215 billion globally last year.  “Frozen” now stands behind the No. 4 all-time worldwide grosser – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ — with $1.34 billion.  In its nearly seven-month global run, “Frozen” already has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, far surpassed “Toy Story 3,” at $1.063 billion worldwide.  In Japan, meanwhile, “Frozen” has ranked No. 1 at the weekend box office for eleven straight weeks and stands as the third-highest grossing Western film there ever. It’s a monumental achievement for the toon considering Japan has such a strong local animation tradition, not to mention a tough-to-topple local live-action film industry, in general.  Elsewhere internationally, the original toon has done boffo biz in South Korea, which has contributed $77 million cumulatively, followed by the U.K. and China, with $65.3 million and $48.7 million, respectively.

T.I. vs. Floyd Mayweather Brawl Erupts on Vegas Strip [VIDEO]

T.I. and Floyd during happier times
According to TMZ, T.I. took a swing at Floyd Mayweather Jr. and it caused a chair-tossing brawl in the Fatburger on the Vegas Strip early Sunday morning ... TMZ has learned ... and we've obtained multiple videos.

According to several witnesses ... Floyd was eating inside the restaurant when T.I. walked up and started jawing at Floyd.

It's unclear what caused the beef, but we're told T.I. swung at Floyd ... their giant bodyguards jumped in to separate them and then the all out melee began.  At one point you hear Floyd telling at T.I., "control your bitch."  Las Vegas PD arrived just as Floyd was leaving and we're told T.I. was already gone.

Police confirm a Fatburger employee was slashed and suffered a minor injury during the fight, but he refused treatment and did not want to cooperate with investigating officers. In other words ... no snitching.

A rep for T.I. had no comment about the fight.  Less than a month ago, T.I. and Game were in the middle of a near riot with LAPD officers outside Supperclub. Check out the video of the brawl below.

Sidebar: How do the rich and famous find themselves in the same brawls they would be in broke and hustling. And at a Fatburgers too? Come on! Ya'll have got to do better than this.

Mo’Nique & Khandi Alexander Join HBO Films’ Bessie Smith Biopic

According to Deadline,  Mo’Nique (Precious) and Khandi Alexander (Scandal) will co-star opposite Queen Latifah in Bessie, HBO’s film about iconic blues singer Bessie Smith (Queen Latifah). Written and directed by Dee Rees based on the life story of Smith, the project chronicles how Smith overcame her tempestuous personal life to become one of the most acclaimed performing and recording artists of the 1920s and ’30s, earning the nickname Empress of the Blues. Mo’Nique will play Ma Rainey, one of the first professional blues singers billed as The Mother of the Blues. Ma Rainey (born Gertrude Pridgett) was already well known when she met then-young Bessie. According to a popular story, which has been disputed, Rainey kidnapped Smith, making her join the Rabbit Foot Minstrels, and teaching her to sing the blues. Alexander will play Bessie’s older sister, Viola. By the time Bessie was nine, both of her parents and one brother had died, with Viola taking care of her siblings. Bessie is produced by HBO Films in association with Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere’s Flavor Unit Entertainment and Lili and the late Richard Zanuck’s the Zanuck Co., with Lili Fini Zanuck, Queen Latifah, Shakim Compere, Shelby Stone and Randi Michel serving as executive producer and Richard Zanuck also getting a posthumous exec producer credit.

Kevin Hart Goes On Twitter Rant About Ex-Wife Torrei Hart

According to BET Centric, It seems Kevin Hart has had enough of ex-wife Torrei Hart's mouth. On Wednesday, the Think Like A Man Too star unpacked all his feelings in a lengthy Twitter rant to more than 10 million followers.  The response followed an "Entertainment Tonight" interview Torrei sat down for in promotion of her new VH1 reality show "Atlanta Exes," also starring Tameka Raymond (ex-wife of Usher Raymond), Sheree Buchanan (ex-wife of former pro football player Ray Buchanan), Monyetta Shaw (ex-fiancée of Ne-Yo), Shanna Moakler (ex-wife of Travis Barker) and Christina Johnson (ex-wife of CeeLo Green).

Shonda Rhimes Inks New 8-Figure Deal With ABC

According to Black Enterprise, ABC’s leading lady, Shonda Rhimes has reportedly inked a new deal with her home network that will keep ShondaLand productions on our television screens until 2018.  The four-year extension, valued at eight figures, will keep Rhimes’ two hit shows, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, on the network’s Thursday night lineup and add her new show How to Get Away With Murder, starring Viola Davis to ABC’s fall schedule.  But don’t think a new network deal is enough to keep Rhimes occupied for four years. The television genius is taking her talents back to her big screen roots and writing a screenplay for Sony’s Columbia Pictures drama titled War Correspondents, which will center around female journalists.  With ABC making Thursdays “Shonda night” and a big screen production under her belt, it seems like 2014 is shaping up to be the year of ShondaLand.

Toni Braxton Opens Up About Plastic Surgery and Having an Abortion [Video]

According to BET Centric, Grammy Award winning singer, Toni Braxton is now revealing startling revelations about her personal life, including a difficult decision she once made to have an abortion, and the reasons why she decided to get plastic surgery in her new memoir, Unbreak My Heart.  "I never thought I would have to do that," the 46-year-old singer revealed in an emotional interview with Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell. "I felt selfish because I was thinking 'I'm going through bankruptcy, there's things going on in my life, I can't give my kid any future'...just feeling hopeless for no reason. What was I thinking?" Braxton also shared that at the time she was on the powerful acne medication Accutane---which has been clinically linked to causing serious side effects to a fetus. She added: "I am not really embarrassed about it, I am more ashamed of myself for doing that because I could've figured something out financially. That was just an excuse I was making for myself."  When asked if she still suffers any guilt for her decision, Braxton responded, "I often tell myself I have three kids. I have two boys, but in my head I feel like I have three kids." In 2001, Braxton gave birth to her son Denim, and later Deizel in 2003. It was later revealed that Diezel, now 11 years old, was diagnosed with Autism---a diagnosis that Toni saw as a punishment for her abortion. "I thought it was because of the abortion, God was punishing me," she shared.  "It took a long time for me to get past that."
Since her debut in 1992, Braxton has long been credited with her sultry appearance. In the hour long interview with O'Dell, Braxton disclosed the reasons why she opted to get plastic surgery, the first operation being rhinoplasty (read: nose job) and later breast augmentation.

"I didn't feel the pressure [from the music industry]...I just wanted to look better in my clothes," she said. "I used to duct-tape the skin that I had. I would just take the skin and just suck it up, and tape it around. I would have marks all over my body." "To be more honest, I just wanted some boobies. I liked how they looked." she added. "My sisters had boobies, I wasn't as fortunate as they were. They used to call me Aunt Dottie.' Braxton's latest album Love, Marriage & Divorce---released this past February in collaboration with her longtime mentorKenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, reached number one on Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. Unbreak My Heart: A Memoir is available now on Amazon.com. Kenya Moore Allegedly Stole Vivica Fox's Cell Phone On 'Celebrity Apprentice'

According to BET Centric, it seems Kenya Moore's penchant for causing on set drama is not exclusive to the Real Housewives of Atlanta. The former Miss USA turned reality star---or "villian" to some---has reportedly brought her pot-stirring antics to the set of the upcoming season of Celebrity Apprentice. And this time she's going toe-to-toe with veteran actress and her 'Apprentice' co-star Vivica A. Fox.  According to the Daily Mail, Moore, 43, allegedly stole Fox’s cell phone. After allegedly stealing the phone, she posted an embarrassing tweet to Vivica’s Twitter page. The Tweet read: sexy “This menopause id killing me I cant think straight, im actin a damn fool half the time 50 just isnt [sic all]"  Sources close to the show's production said that Fox went into a tirade against Kenya when she realized what happened. The incident reportedly led to her dismissal, and show creator Donald Trump allegedly calling her "the most evil woman in America." Ouch.  Both actresses have yet to address the incident publicly.
