Diahann Carroll Pulls Out Of 'A Raisin in the Sun'

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 78-year-old star has dropped out "due to the demands of the vigorous rehearsal and performance schedule." She was set to make her return to the stage after 30 years as the family matriarch, Lena Younger ("Mama").  LaTanya Richardson Jackson, wife of Samuel L. Jackson, will step in Carroll's place and star alongside Denzel Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Sophie Okonedo, David Cromer, Bruce Clyde Jenkins and others. Kenny Leon will direct.  The 1959 drama, penned by Lorraine Hansberry, follows a Black family who attempts to leave Chicago's South Side for new life in a better neighborhood.  Preview performances being March 8, with opening night set for April 3 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre where the original production debuted 55 years ago.
