Tyler Perry's Temptation Movie Review

"If you let the devil ride, he gonna wanna drive!" sings Tyler Perry in his Google plus hang out the day before his movie Tyler Perry's 'Temptation' premieres. This line basically sums up the movie! I think this man is such a genius by taking advantage of  technology to connect directly with his fans. Most stars don't even come close to connecting the way he does. What I love most about the 'Temptation' movie is how Perry showcases this amazing young cast to illustrate how one wrong decision can change your entire life. The film leads us on a journey that shows what can happen when temptation entices you to step outside your relationship. I love the stories Tyler Perry tells. In every movie you can see his growth as a writer/director.  For me, the movie really got started in the middle, and I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet, but just know things are not what they seem. Lance Gross did a great job! And that Jurnee Smollett, well chile, she is just down right amazing in everything she does. This role is no different! She brings it.  I was proud that Tyler Perry didn't have to show overt sex scenes or drug scenes for us to get the message too. This movie will connect with everyone, but I am elated that young audiences will be drawn to watch and walk away with such an important message.  The biggest surprise for me was that, I really liked Kim Kardashian! She was perfect for her role. Remember how mad people were that Perry even cast Kim in the movie? I'm no saint, I questioned why too, but after seeing it, I was like - perfect casting. Sometimes we have to wait and see, before we speak and judge.  Below is the trailer for the movie and my ticket stub. Yeah, it's 2013, but we still gotta check!

Elise Neal and Vanessa Bell Calloway in Under Shepherd on TV ONE

According to Blackfilm.com, TV One presents the world television premiere of Russ Parr’s award-winning film The Undershepherd, starring Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lamman Rucker (“Meet The Browns”), Malinda Williams (“Soul Food”), Elise Neal (“Belles,” “The Hughleys”), Vanessa Bell Calloway (“Shameless”), Clifton Powell (“Ray”), Bill Cobb (“Go On”), Robinne Lee (“Hitch”), Keith David (“Belles,” “Cloud Atlas”) and Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr. The thought-provoking film exploring the underbelly of power and corruption in the church premieres Saturday, March 30, 8PM/ET and Sunday, March 31, 5:30PM/ET exclusively on TV One.  The Under Shepherd — directed by Russ Parr. Best friends LC and Roland are two young, ambitious ministers, climbing the ranks at the First Baptist Church. Coming up under the leadership of Dr. Ezekial Canon, the church’s elderly pastor, Roland and LC have dreams of becoming the predecessors of the aging pastor. But, the feeble Dr. Canon stubbornly refuses to step-down, forcing the two young ministers to make pivotal decisions that ultimately fray the fabric of their deeply-woven friendship.  Russ Parr: It’s not a romantic comedy or a model that everyone loves and I’m taking a chance. This one is a very powerful drama that deals with two pastors and this is a campy film where one is leaving the church and comes back. This is someone leaving the church. One of the pastor turns into this huge tele-evangelist. This won’t be the stereotypical thing where he’s having sex with young men. I’m doing something that’s real, and that really does happen in the church. It just shows what power, money and greed does to people. To me, it’s one of my favorite scripts and I wrote that about three years ago.
Side Bar: Isaiah Washington is so good he made me hate him and that hasn't happened since he was on Grey's Anatomy. What I was most impressed with was with the quality of the acting and the quality of the picture. Only your 5th movie Russ Parr? Looks like you been doing this forever! Thank you for creating another opportunity to see our black actors do what they do!

The Game Returns to BET Tonight

Check out what Wendy Raquel Robinson has to say about the 6th season of The Game in this Studio Q interview below.  I love the addition of Brandy as an official cast member instead of just a recurring character.  It should be interesting to see how it all works out without Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry.

Cedric the Entertainer Named New 'Millionaire' Host

According to USA Today Cedric the Entertainer has been named the new host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.  The comedian will ask for "final answers" starting this fall, when he'll replace Meredith Vieira, who has presided over the daytime version of the game show since it began airing in syndication in 2002. Regis Philbin presided over the original series, which was a monster hit for ABC starting in 1999 and ushered in a wave of reality TV.  "I'm truly looking forward to hosting Millionaire,'" Cedric said in a statement. "The show is a modern day game show giant, and the team at Disney-ABC has been great at putting the right elements together over 11 seasons. I'm excited to entertain all those who watch and play as season 12 launches ... It's going to be a good time every day!"  Millionaire has not held up as well as some of its counterparts: The show is averaging 3.2 million viewers this season, down 10% from last year, and has less than half the audience of the rebounding Family Feud, hosted by Steve Harvey. But Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! remain game-show kings, drawing 11 million and 9.6 million viewers, respectively, in their mostly early-evening time slots.

Sidebar: I love Cedric the Entertainer! He will definitely breath life into the show. He's one of my favorite comedians.  Check out our Studio Q interview with the Original Kings of Comedy below on the set of his TV Land hit The Soul Man, which was renewed for a 2nd season.

Studio Q Interviews Veteran Actress Jenifer Lewis

Is there a movie that Jenifer Lewis has not been in? Check your DVD collection or your TV guide and I 'm sure you will see her name come up more than it doesn't.  This veteran actress is a treasured legend, especially to Black Hollywood. And who didn't hate her in, 'What's Love Got To Do With It' starring Angela Bassett or 'Not Easily Broken starring Taraji P. Henson'.  Studio Q had the distinct honor to sit down with Jenifer Lewis in the backyard of her Hollywood mansion.  If you liked Jenifer Lewis before, be prepared to fall in love with her after this interview. Her honesty, words of wisdom, and humor, are what you will immediately feel after watching this interview. Check out our interview with the original Dreamgirl below. You will walk away inspired.

Studio Q's First Interview EVER

Everyone has to start somewhere and my first interview was with my Great-Grandmother Luella Logan. I interviewed her about the Great Depression for my 8th grade History class. My second interview was also with my grandma, just 7 years later (posted below) during a college break at her retirement home.  In honor of Throwback Thursday, I thought I would post what can now be considered as the beginnings of Studio Q. It is also a sweet memory of my great-grandmother who passed away in 1995.  So thankful I decided to grab a camera and do this interview. She wasn't really interested in talking, but she indulged me, just like many Hollywood stars I talk to! Thank you for my first interview Grandma! I love and miss you more than I can express. May you rest in peace.

Le'Andria Johnson & Tyrese Gibson Rehearse "A Song For You"

Studio Q captured Tyrese Gibson and Le'Andria Johnson at rehearsals for BET's Celebration of Gospel show, which is set to air April 7, 2013.  If their performance is half as good as this rehearsal then please set your DVR now! I was blown away at these two voices. I love how BET always puts together incredible collaborations making the show exciting and unique. I could have never imagined these two together. Their voices are magic. And there is nothing like turning a beautiful classic by Donny Hathaway into a love song for God.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Fired From 'The View'

According to US Weekly, The people have spoken. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, one of the five cohorts of ABC’s daytime talk show The View, will not be returning to the couch next season, following hot on the footsteps of fellow cohost Joy Behar, a source tells Us Weekly.  According to the source, the show’s resident conservative voice is being ousted after market research revealed that she isn’t popular with TV audiences.  “The viewers they polled all said she was too extreme and right wing,” the insider tells Us. “People did not watch the show because of Elisabeth. So they told her yesterday her contract would not be renewed.”  Hasselbeck, 35, joined the cast of the daytime talk show in November 2003 after guest-hosting the show following Lisa Ling’s departure in 2002.

Throughout the course of her time on The View, she has gotten into numerous arguments with her cohosts, including a heated argument with Rosie O’Donnell in 2007 over the War in Afghanistan and with Barbara Walters over Mitt Romney in 2012.  Earlier this week, Behar, 70, announced her own departure from the show after 16 1/2 years.  “You can’t stay forever on a show,” she told Good Morning America. “I am graciously exiting stage left. I’ve put in 16 1/2 years and felt the time was right. I want to explore other opportunities.”  Adds the source to Us: “Joy says it just felt … tired and like work. She was over it.” Behar has been with the talk show since its inception in 1997, and currently hosts Joy Behar: Say Anything! on Current TV

Sidebar: They are dropping out like flies! I have never been a fan of Elisabeth so I'm not sad to see her leave. Barbara??? Going once. Going twice? Ya'll know she aint going nowhere. Lol! BIG Sigh....

Whitney Houston FBI Files Released - Extortion & Crazed Fans

According to USA Today the FBI, in answer to Freedom of Information Act requests, has released files on Whitney Houston.  Among the 128 pages of documents are several fan letters and FBI paperwork regarding an extortion case that eventually was closed without anyone being prosecuted. But it does appear that Houston paid off the person who was demanding hush money.  In 1992 a letter, marked "extortion" by the FBI, was sent to Houston's New Jersey offices of Nippy Inc., in which a woman demanded that unless Houston paid $100,000, "certain details" of her "private life" would be revealed. A later letter upped the ante to $250,000 and claims to have "intimate details" of Houston's "romantic relationships."The FBI interviewed Houston, two lawyers and her father, John Houston. The singer tells agents she considered the woman "a friend" and "did discuss personal things" with her.  It appears from the documents that Houston's father next sends the person a confidentiality agreement along with a sum of money (the amount is blacked out in FBI documents) and the case was closed soon after. The fan mail, from a male writer whose name is not included but is postmarked from Vermont, professes profound adoration for the singer. A review of one, however, caught the eye of the FBI as the agency determined the writer "might hurt someone with some crazy idea and not realize how stupid an idea it was until after it was done." Among the contents, the fan wrote: "Miss Whitney, you are just so pretty and so beautiful. I just cannot stop thinking about you. Many times when I think about you I will start to shake..... I really and truly am in love with you."  And in another letter: "Over the past 17 months, I have sent ... 66 letters to Miss Whitney. ... I have been to 9 of Miss Whitney's concerts and I have tried to give her flowers twice at the concerts. ... When I first fell in love with Miss Whitney Houston I tried to ignore what I felt towards her. After 5 months I had to do something so I started writing letters. I have tried to stop writing the letters and to give up twice but after a few weeks I had to start writing again."The writer goes on to say that getting no response from Houston was frustrating. "I have gotten mad at her a few times. ... it scares me that I might come up with some crazy or stupid or really dumb idea that might be as bad or even worse than that... I might hurt someone with some crazy idea."Later, he wrote: "Miss Whitney, why can't you respond to my 70 plus letters? ... You probably think I'm crazy. Well, (maybe) I am. I just can't give up. I have to keep trying. I really am in love with you." The FBI marked one 1988 letter as possible "extortion" as the letter included a line about the writer making his love known for Houston publicly in the National Enquirer or on The Phil Donahue Show. According to the FBI report, agents interviewed the writer at his small, cluttered one-room apartment and determined: "He believed this 'crazy idea' would have hurt Houston's reputation so he did not follow through on it." Based on those facts, and that he didn't intend to physically harm Houston, the FBI concluded that it did not constitute a violation of federal law.  And in one other case, investigators flew to Brussels to track down a Dutch fan who claimed to have sent tapes to Houston. He accused her of performing his music. In 1999, the FBI wrote that the fan "pledged there would be no further attempts on his part to communicate in any way with Houston."

Sidebar: Our Whitney had so much to deal with.  It is amazing with all the craziness that went on she still had a smile on her face and carried love in her heart.   I pray she is surrounded by nothing but peace and love now.

Sanaa Lathan and Terrence Howard to Star in Macbeth

According to Indiewire.comTerrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan and Harry Lennix are all set to star in a new film version of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, set to start pre-production in Sept. 2013 on location in Jamaica and Puerto Rico.  The film, to be titled Macbett, will also star Blair Underwood and Evan Ross and is written and directed by Aleta Chappelle, who is the first Amercan-American woman to direct a film version of a Shakespeare play.  Howard not only plays the lead in the film, but is also the executive producer, along with producers Re'Shaun Frear and Kip Konwiser.  As the filmmakers describe their new take on the play: "after a gallant military victory, General Macbett (Howard) encounters the “Weird Sisters,” who are the spirit daughters of Mother Africa and reign over fire, water, earth and sky. They delight in manipulating Macbett by feeding him predictions of royal titles including “King.” Macbett soon becomes obsessed with ambition, as does his beautiful and ruthless wife Lady Macbett (Lathan). "As Macbett and his Lady spiral downward, indulging in treachery and political assassinations, they are soon haunted by their murderous deeds and driven mad. In a true exemplification of a tragedy, Macbett is defeated by his own zealous thirst for power, a heartbreaking end to a once beloved Hero." Though this is the first film of a black version of Macbeth, it is not the first time this has been done. Back in the 1936 Orson Welles, a few years before he directed his film Citizen Kane, directed a black stage version in New York set in Haiti, called Voodoo Macbeth which caused a sensation back in its day.

Erica Campbell Talks Mary Mary and Going Solo

Thirteen years ago we were introduced to the crossover gospel hit "Shackles," which is considered one of the pioneering songs of urban contemporary gospel music.  Mary Mary has earned 3 Grammy Awards, 2 American Music Awards, an NAACP Image Award and a BET Award.  And just last month, they took home a Grammy for best gospel song, "Go Get It," which has become an anthem for both secular and gospel fans alike. Recently, Studio Q caught up with one half of the gospel duo, Mary Mary, Erica Campbell.  We chatted with her on the red carpet of the 2nd annual Gospel Goes to Hollywood Awards luncheon.  Erica talked about balancing motherhood with career, looking out for her sister and stylist Goo Goo, and branching out to add solo career to her resume. She even blessed the mic with a few lines of a Mary Mary song. Check out our interview below and continue the conversation with Erica on Twitter @therealmaymary
