Mary J. Blige Says Whitney's Death Sparked Lifestyle Change

Mary J. Blige covers the December issue of SHAPE Magazine where she explains how she got into the best shape of her life reports TheYBF. MJB explained how Whitney's death helped her get in shape and how she conquered her fear of swimming.  Here are the highlights:
On how Whitney's death inspired her:
Whitney Houston’s death really crushed me.. I saw someone so incredibly talented just diminish, and I refuse to go out like that.
On maintaining her bod:
My main exercise is cardio. The treadmill is fine but running outdoors gives me the best results. I try to log 6 to 8 miles a week. I could be in the worst mood, but when I do my cardio I feel much, much better.
On giving up alcohol:
Others may be able to drink and have a great time, but it doesn’t work for me at this point. I haven’t had a drink in a year and three months. I had quit for a long time but started again about five years ago. I’m off it completely once more, and now I feel stronger than ever.”
On swimming and conquering fears:
I never swam as a kid and that always bothered me. At first, it was very hard, but once I got in the water and figured out how to breathe, it was so liberating. Now it's helping me with every aspect of my life - personally and professionally. Conquering that fear was a huge boost to my confidence. I'm as proud of this accomplishment as I would be if I had graduated from college, which I never got to do.
In other MJB news, Mary taped a CMA Christmas Special recently (airing December 2nd on ABC), and she's starring in Black Nativity (November 27th).

Sidebar: I hope Whitney also inspired Mary to sell over 200 million albums and become an icon. Whitney didn't have to die to inspire a lifestyle change in anyone because her life did. Whitney's presence in the world and accomplishments in music inspired a generation and far outweigh her struggles. Mary's own life should have inspired her lifestyle change not Whitney's death. Whitney's star was so bright she introduced Mary to a completely different level of stardom just by bringing her on stage of the vh-1's divas show - that is what she should be inspired by.

‘USA Today’ blasted on Twitter for calling ‘The Best Man Holiday’ a ‘race-themed’ movie

USA Today was blasted on Twitter this past weekend — and rightfully so — for their misguided characterization of the friend-themed hit movie, The Best Man Holiday, as a race-based product that shocked film prognosticators with a $30.6 million opening weekend reports Rolling Out.  Spike Lee’s cousin, Malcolm D. Lee, wrote and directed the Universal romantic comedy sequel that debuted against the Marvel superhero sequel, Thor: The Dark World, which took in $38.5 million. When that headline incited a blowback of caustic complaints, it was soon changed to “ ‘Holiday’€™ Nearly Beats ‘Thor’™ as Ethnically Diverse Films Soar.” The original tweet was deleted, too.  To further illustrate their fumbling and bumbling over the topic, USA Today changed the title a third time to simply read: “The Best Man Holiday’ Nearly Beats ‘Thor.’ The damage was done, however, and social media ripped the major national newspaper chain for its ridiculous title and perspective on the movie that scarcely spent a moment discussing race.  Check out some of the tweets.

Sidebar: Really USA Today? Sigh...even when we as black people do phenomenal against all kind of odds we get knocked down again with stuff like this. The fact that they changed their title three times let's you know that they knew they were wrong. Thank God for social media today. For all the bad it causes sometimes it is the best tool to correct stuff like this and get an immediate response.
