Studio Q Book Review: The Whitney I Knew, by BeBe Winans

I was so excited to get this book for my birthday (July 19th) last week. I read the 219 pages pretty quickly. It was a great read, but here's my problem with it. I have heard almost every story I read in a TV interview, at the funeral, or in the Rolling Stones article that featured an excerpt from the memoir. For some reason I was expecting to read about moments BeBe Winans had with Whitney that were not shared already. Die-hard Whitney fans will notice this immediately. I am still happy to own the book and will treasure it because it is about BeBe's memories with Whitney.  I was just a little disappointed to read stories I already heard before. However, I am sure most of the general public are not Whitney fanatics like me, so you my friends, are going to love it! For my fellow Whitney stans, buy it, to have it.  It's about our girl and so we must support it.  But you will say to yourself many times, "Oh I heard him talk about this on such and such." Still, I feel it is worth owning. Big thank you to my best friend, Tam for securing me a copy early.  The book doesn't come out until July 31, 2012, so you know, I feel special.  It definitely kicked off my birthday in a great way. The red Q wine wasn't too bad either!

Ledisi & Eric Benet Live at Club Nokia!

(Ledisi performs 'Pieces of Me' in London)

(Studio Q interviews Eric Benet)

Yesterday I celebrated my birthday at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA with the sweet sounds of Ledisi and Eric Benet! They both really put on an amazing show. It was a great birthday gift from my best friend, Tam. It was also my first time seeing each artist perform live.  Nothing like your soul being fed by beautiful lyrics, great musicians, and real artists.  I was in bliss. Afterwards, I purchased Ledisi's new book, and stood in line for an autograph and yes, a bold twitter request. Can you believe I had the nerve to ask Ledisi to follow me on Twitter? It must have been my birthday confidence.  She laughed, but guess what? Ledisi now follows me on Twitter! (@studioqtv). Remember a closed mouth doesn't get fed.  But what really made my night was watching how nice Ledisi was to her fans. It was so refreshing to see authentic kindness. It's so rare these days. Just because you pay your hard earned recession dollars for entertainment doesn't make the stars nice. Thank God Ledisi was nice before you ever paid for a CD, book, or ticket. We need more divas like her.  She reminds me of the great Patti Labelle! Oh yes, ya'll today was a good day! [In my Ice Cube Voice] well, yesterday was. You know what I mean. Lol!

Happy Birthday Gerald Levert #RIP

I was privileged to meet Gerald Levert one time. It was back in 2000 in New York City at the Rhiga Royale hotel in Manhattan. I was sitting at the hotel bar with someone who knew him. As soon as we saw Gerald walk by he got up and stopped him. They both knew each other from Ohio, Cleveland I think it was. I remember Gerald being so nice and me shamelessly rubbing up against his soft mink coat to take this photo. Happy Birthday Gerald! Thank you for your music. May you #RIP forever.
