Miki Howard - My New Favorite Person

Have you ever met someone who was super talented and also has such an infectious spirit that you want to be instant friends? I felt that way when I met Oprah Winfrey, Whitney Houston, Emmanuel Lewis, and now Miki Howard! I've met a lot of great people, but the ones who are positive and keep it all the way real are far and few between. Therefore, when you run into them you want to hold on tight, like dirt, in the swifter mop commercial.  But I heard somewhere, if you keep putting positive vibes out there, you will run into those inspiring people more often. (Note to myself- be more positive- Lol!).  Well, Miki Howard already had me as a fan from her song "Come Share My Love." I know she has range and a gang of other hits, but this was my anthem! I played it like it was the only song that existed. So, imagine my surprise, when I go to see Ms. Howard perform the rest of her set list of hits at The Catalina Jazz Club. Blew me away. I was like, so I could have been playing more than one song of hers .  There were so many more great hits I could have blasted in the hallways of Merner Hall (my dorm)  at Clark Atlanta University? In a word- Yes! Miki and her band were amazing! After I watched Miki Howard bring the house down for a sold-out crowd at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, I became a super fan.  Later I sat down with the legendary songstress for some good fun and great conversation. Take a listen to my  Studio Q - Miki Howard Interview.   I really didn't think I could become a bigger fan, but to quote her song from her latest album, Private Collection, "You made me love you." Miki Howard's personality is as wonderful as her voice, and let me tell you, that's hard to match. It is always a treat when the one you love to listen to, is also the one you like to talk to. Most times those two usually do not go together.  But I had a ball, with Miki! She is my new favorite person.  No one keeps it more real than Miki, so you can't help but love her. Her sultry voice is captivating, and her energy is infectious. With over 25 years in the industry, Miki is in a class by herself- on and off stage.  My best friend, Tam had such a great time the next day she went into play Miki Howard's music every waking moment mode.  She even did research on her life. I was like, um, you could have done that a week ago lady, may have even helped me with my interview info. She was a fan before too, but now she like me is a super fan, that really would like to be a friend.  Her personality makes you feel that way.  Bottom line is I am honored and privileged that I got a chance to meet and interview Miki Howard. Check it out above.

Jennifer Hudson To Join MJ Tribute Lineup

I can't watch TV without seeing a Jennifer Hudson commercial about Weight Watchers. She looks so amazing and thin I almost forget the girl won an Academy Award, a Grammy, and oh yeah she's a mother and soon to be wife. You even forget about the horrible tragedy that happened a few years back taking the life of her mother, brother and precious nephew.  She has been through a lot and is standing strong, looking amazing, with a career in full swing! According to Essence.com: Jennifer Hudson just can't keep still these days. The "Spotlight" star has been busy wowing fans with performances, promoting her latest album and prepping for the role of a lifetime as Winnie Mandela.

The poster for the highly-anticipated biopic has finally been revealed. Branded as the "epic untold love story" between Winnie and Nelson Mandela, J-Hud depicts Winnie throughout her years as a South African revolutionary and devoted. The singer stars alongside Terrance Howard as Nelson. Check out the poster above! Thoughts?

Plus, the Chi-town diva also recently rocked the stage in her hometown at Chicago's Paris Club’s upstairs lounge Studio Paris and has reportedly joined the superstar lineup for Michael Jackson's special tribute!

I'm so looking forward to Hudson starring as Winnie Mandela. She might even be the first African-American to get two Oscars.  With everything going on with her you almost forget that this girl can SANG. I know she is going to blow everyne away at the MJ tribute. Go ahead now JHUD!

I'm So Sad About Vesta Williams Passing Away...

The song 'Congratulations' was a big hit for Vesta back in the 80's

A recent Live version of the song 'Congratulations'

This was a great interview done last year featuring Vesta and Egypt Thompson

It was just on September 14th, 2011 that Vesta Williams Tweeted:

"Gotta say, R.I.P. To the beautiful Amy Winehouse. Gone too damned soon. Such an incredibly talented musician." Now today, in the words of one Youtuber "The world has just become a little bit darker."   I was so sad to find out that Vesta past away today.  Even though I didn't know her personally and never had the pleasure of meeting her, my heart ached about the news.  According to Black Voices on The Huffington Post, Vesta Williams, the 80's diva known for her powerful voice, was found dead in her California hotel room last night, according to reports. Though news sources have reported the singer was 48 years old, Williams can be seen in a 2010 interview saying she was 53.
Williams scored a big hit with "Congratulations," a song about a woman who discovers her former lover is getting married, and which became a talent show staple/
JackeƩ Harry, the television actress, tweeted her condolences about the singer's passing.
"...just received truly devastating news: R&B great, and my friend of many yrs, Vesta Williams (@vesta4u), has passed away. #RIPVesta"
In the 1990s, Williams made headlines for her dramatic weight loss. She told Ebony that she began gaining weight rapidly after her singing career started to falter. Vesta, who was 5-foot-3, eventually reached a size 26. She said her size was the reason she lost her recording contract.
"When I lost my record deal and my phone wasn't ringing, I realized that I had to reassess who Vesta was and figure out what was going wrong," she said. "I knew it wasn't my singing ability. So it had to be that I was expendable because I didn't have the right look."
The singer went on to lose 100 lbs, and got down down to a size 6, while finding something of a second career as a songwriter and session singer.
In recent years, Vesta had become an advocate for the prevention of childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes.

Somebody wrote on youtube that the world just got a little darker. I agree. Even though I never met her she seemed like a very bright light.  The following are a few of her final tweets:
Vesta Williams

"Gotta say, R.I.P. To the beautiful Amy Winehouse. Gone too damned soon. Such an incredibly talented musician."
14 Sep
  Vesta Williams

"Thank you L.A. and Thank u 2 Ca. State Senate 4 my proclamation. Humbled, and Honored. Had a blast! LOVE YOU GUYS"
Vesta Williams

"Raining..in L.A. ..again...okay! The show must go on. LOL. Tweet y'all later."
Vesta Williams
"Just wanted to stop by and say hi! Gotta ready myself for this show tonight..Soundcheck and all. For those of you coming, see ya there!"

This is one of her more recent singles and videos that I found on Youtube

A very nice tribute video I found on Youtube

Derek Luke Lands A Lead Role In Sparkle - CinemaBlend.com

This cast is coming together very quickly. Actor,  Derek Luke Lands A Lead Role In Sparkle - CinemaBlend.com I hate that this movie won't be released until 2012.  I am so excited about it because Whitney Houston is in it.  She will play Sparkle's mother. Re-makes are so difficult to duplicate well, especially when the original was so friggin good. People are going to be really upset if they mess this movie up. It is a classic favorite within the black community.  I think I will watch the original this weekend and try to imagine how they will pull it off.  No matter what it will garner my honest support, and since Whitney has signed on, it is already pre-approved.  I see myself at a press junket, interviewing Whitney about the movie, and she tilting her head to look at me sideways, and says, "Don't I know you from somewhere?"

Now Editing my Interview with Miki Howard

I can't wait for you to see my interview with Miki Howard.  You will never guess what I gave her as a gift before my interview.  Right now, I am editing the footage.  It's so fun re-visiting my time with her.  She was so much fun! I love when extremely talented people that you love are also cool as hell. It makes you love them even more.  I had a ball and you will too when you check out my video/ and Studio Q podcast.  Stay tuned!!!!

Floyd Mayweather Post Fight Interview

Floyd Mayweather did what he said he was going to do! He knocked out Victor Ortiz. Check out this post fight interview. I like Floyd. I love how he emotional he is, and the relationship he has with his uncle/trainer, his children, and his family and friends.  Yes, he talks a lot, but in the words of Beyonce's song Ego, "He can back it up."  When you put in the kind of work that he does, with a perfect record 43-0, I think he should be able to say whatever.  Criticize the people who have a whole bunch to say, with none of his credentials. They are the ones who should be quiet.  People now hail Muhammad Ali for being outspoken. I think he deserves the right to say, he's the best - because he is!

Ray-J Responds to Fight w/ Fabolous!

Ray-J is going in about his fight with rapper Fabolous! I pray he calms down. He sound like he's going to have a heart attack. Twitter jokes got people heated.  It all started dating back to that episode on HBO's 24/7.  If you didn't see it - Ray-J was over to Floyd Mayweather's house playing the piano and singing. Apparently, Fabolous tweeted jokes about it. And the rest is unfolding history. Social media is like the schoolyard playground for grown- ups and celebrities. Tweet carefully or you might be in a real-life scuffle! Now trending on Twitter - #ray-j and #thingstougherthanrayj It was said that Ray-J got a beat down, which is why he called the radio station mad. According to Bossip and Twitter
Here are the series of tweets that seem to have sparked the rumors.

Studio Q at the Miki Howard Show Live @ Catalina Jazz Club

Last night, I attended Miki Howard's show at the Catalina Jazz club in Hollywood. The show was beyond amazing!  She is truly a legendary songstress. I loved every moment of her performance, even the songs I didn't know.  My interview will be posted tomorrow. I was invited to come to the show again tonight and I graciously accepted.  Yes, Howard's show is worth missing the Mayweather vs. Ortiz fight tonight. By the way, Mayweather better win with his  all that talk he do on 24/7.  I will post my interview tomorrow and include some live songs from tonight.  I also ran into actors Kellita Smith and Darius McCray who sang for Studio Q.  Kellita introduced Miki and was truly funny.  I think she missed her calling.  She told me that the late Bernie Mac (Kellita played Bernie Mac's wife on The Bernie Mac Show) encouraged her to do stand-up.  I must catch one of her future routines, because she was off the chain last night.

I LOVE this Miki Howard song!

I love me some Miki Howard. No, wait that is an understatement, I looooove Miki Howard's voice. Check out this song Beer for Breakfast taken from her latest CD entitled "Private Collection," which for the record is so worth buying on Miki's official website. I love this song, because of the message in it, which is  do what you want to do, and not what others think you should do. If that means having a beer for breakfast, then by all means, chug-a-lug! Miki Howard also performed 'Beer for Breakfast' and 'Love Under New Management' on Monique's late night show.  Doesn't she look great? She turns 51 on September 30, 2011. Shoot, bump 50, I am trying to look this good when I turn 30!

Beauty School "TRY OUT"

Today I have an appointment at a beauty school in Inglewood, CA.  I am excited at getting my hair done for $13.  I'm only going because  I saw a friend of mine recently and her hair was bangin! We go to the same hairdresser, so I just assumed that is where she had been. Nope! So, immediately, my best friend, and I got all the necessary info.  Today we both have an appointment with the student stylist that did my friend's hair. Fingers crossed that our hair comes out just as nice.  Shoot, for $13, I'll just be happy that it's washed and dried by somebody else besides me!

Update:  The beauty "Try out" was a success! I will be back again, and again. I think the trick like at a real salon is getting a good stylist. Since I already viewed her work via a friend, half the battle was won.  Big shout out to student stylist Omari who hooked a sister up for $13.  I even got a trim.

Andre Walker Deep Conditioning Hair Mask

Andre Walker Total Keratin Obsession Deep Conditioning Hair Mask
When I heard Oprah talk about this conditioner on her Behind The Scenes Show on OWN I immediately wanted to try it.  Even though I have natural hair that I straighten with a pressing comb, I was still excited that I might get added moisture and softness by using it.  When I read that this keratin-based hair mask conditions deeply, moisturizes, protects hair against environmental aggressors, and provide hair with protein, I was more than interested.
BUT it was the claim to work well on dry, damaged, breaking or stressed out hair that ultimately made me BUY the product.  I have been experiencing some hair breakage lately, so I was eager for something new to help.  This 3 pack retails at $45.  Uh, yes FORTY- FIVE DOLLARS! Must not be a recession at Harpo.  I was able to get it for $30 on the HSN site, but that is still too much to pay for something that in the end made by scalp itch. I used it again last night just to make sure I wasn't imagining things, and I am scratching as I type.
Although it smells nice and Oprah uses it, this is not the product for me. But just because it didn't work out for me, doesn't mean it wouldn't be great for your hair. Everything is not for everybody.  I am kinda glad though. Can you imagine if I couldn't live without it, and to had to pay $45 for three 2 oz packets and 6 applications every so often.  Uh, I'd be broke!  Not in the budget anyway.
My main compliment is that it really smells amazing.  Not worth it to me though just to smell good, and have to scratch like hell later! However. you may love it. For some reason I think it would probably work better on white people. Although it clearly states that the product is for all hair types, most of the reviews I read were from white women. Yeah, Oprah is plenty black, but she is also rich, and has Andre to fix whatever is wrong. So I know if her hair itched for one moment like mine did - it was corrected.  My correction is just not to buy it anymore.  Such an expensive lesson! The same thing happened when I tried Paul Mitchell Tea Tree conditioner. It could be something in the ingredients, or I'm just allergic to expensive products.  The Mitchell conditioner also smelled good, and gave me a nice tingle under the plastic cap. Sadly, it also had me itching too. It was so bad I really thought I needed a flea and tick collar.  Bottom line is I can go to any beauty supply store and and buy the same type of conditioner for under $2.00.
I was horrified to see I could have tried 15 different conditioners for the same price.

Oprah Tweeted Me!

It's been awhile (back in May) But I am still amazed that Oprah tweeted me back TWICE! Yes, it was quite a twitter moment.  My friend sent her a gift (above) to thank her for the trip to Miraval Resorts, a world class spa, in Phoenix Arizona. We were given this all expense paid trip when we attended a Oprah taping April 11, 2011.  So, this is not new news, but I like to reflect on great moments. And with almost 8 million twitter followers, Oprah tweeting me, was indeed a great moment.  Now for the NEW news - A few days ago (September 15, 2011) Oprah tweeted a picture of herself and Rosie standing in front of her historic Harpo marquee, which now also features Rosie's name.  The Rosie Show will premiere on OWN October 10th at 7PM ET. Fingers crossed, that it is a ratings bonanza for OWN.  I want Oprah's network to succeed. We need positive programming on TV. Thank you Oprah for willing to work hard enough to give it to us.

Presidential Address To Congress

After being glued to my computer watching Oprah live on Facebook, I turned my attention to the TV, and was counting down the minutes til the president's speech.  Why then would I take a shower, wash my hair, and miss half his speech? Who does that? Uh, me. Thank God for DVR's! I rewinded the entire speech.  I wanted to hear it before every cable host known to man adds their spin to it. Let's just say the president had swagger in his speech.  I am glad I rewound it. It was worth it. Now Congress, "You should pass the jobs bill, right away."

Oprah Live on Facebook!

I love social media.  Today I watched Oprah Live on Facebook.  I am inspired by Lady O and can listen to her talk all day long.  There were many highlights that left me feeling lifted.  She seemed so happy to be there. It ran about an hour long. Oprah didn't need a lot of questions to give great answers. At one point she even said, "I am going to let you do the interview."  She couldn't help herself. Check out the lightning round portion of the interview.  It was pretty fun!  Click and listen. Oprah Live at Facebook!

Ella Fitz Gerald and Dizzy Gillespie

All of the great photos I blogged about I found on this awesome website, entitled Awesome People Hanging Out. Such an appropriate title.

David Bowie and Elizabeth Taylor

They both look like women.

Sammy Davis Jr. and Marilyn Monroe

My friend said that the photo looks photo-shopped. She's probably right. However it is nice to look at.

Oprah, Mary and Kanye

This looks like a pic we would take with our own camera. I love candids!

Jay-Z and Will Smith

I wanna laugh too!

Madonna, Sting, and 2 Pac

I wonder what their conversation was about.

Prince & Prince Charles

Body language gives away the lack of chemistry between the princes.

Muhammad Ali & Sammy Davis jr.

Looks like they were having fun.

Betty White & Slash

Even snakes love Betty White?

Ava Gardner, Stevie Wonder and Lena Horne

Oh the history these three made.

Stevie Wonder & Bob Marley

I would like to hear what a record would sound like made by these two.

Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes

Two amazing writers. If possible - I wonder what kind of movie they would co-write together in 2011.

Dave Grohl, RuPaul and Kurt Cobain

The word "Wow" is sometimes grossly overused, but not in this case, and not for this photo - Wow!
